But the Spanish and Portuguese newcomers who arrived in the sixteenth century seemed interested in the Guarani only to advance their own interests, either through material exchange or by getting the Guarani to serve them. This book tells the story of how Europeans felt empowered to pursue individual gain in the New World, and how the Guarani people confronted this challenge to their very way of being. Although neither Guarani nor Europeans were in a position to grasp the larger meaning of the moment, their meeting was part of a global sea change in human relations and the nature of economic exchange. Brian P. Owensby uses the centuries-long encounter between Europeans and the indigenous people of South America to reframe the notion of economic gain as a historical development rather than a matter of human nature. Owensby argues that gain--the pursuit of individual, material self-interest--must be understood as a global development that transformed the lives of Europeans and non-Europeans, wherever these two encountered each other in the great European expansion spanning the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries"-- $c Provided by publisher. 650 0 $a Exchange $z Paraguay $x History. 650 0 $a Reciprocity (Psychology) $z Paraguay $x History. 650 0 $a Guarani Indians $z Paraguay $x History. 650 0 $a White people $z Paraguay $x History. $x History. 650 0 $a Economics $x Moral and ethical aspects. 651 0 $a Paraguay $x History $y To 1811. 651 0 $a Paraguay $x History. $x History. 650 6 $a Echange (Economie politique) $z Paraguay $x Histoire. 650 6 $a Reciprocite (Psychologie) $z Paraguay $x Histoire. 650 6 $a Guarani (Indiens) $z Paraguay $x Histoire. 650 6 $a Economie politique $x Aspect moral. 651 6 $a Paraguay $x Histoire $y Jusqu'a 1811. 650 7 $a Economics $x Moral and ethical aspects. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00902162 650 7 $a Ethnic relations. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00916005 650 7 $a Exchange. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00917649 650 7 $a Guarani Indians. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00948758 650 7 $a Reciprocity (Psychology) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01742241 650 7 $a White people $x Relations with Indians. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01174826 651 7 $a Paraguay. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01205550 648 7 $a To 1811 $2 fast 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 776 08 $i Online version: $a Owensby, Brian Philip, 1959- $t New world of gain. $d Stanford, California : Stanford University Press, 2021 $z 9781503628342 $w (DLC) 2021013026 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20231117024923.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=18FBF5BE253111EE91433F782CECA4DBInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
