The next novel, unfinished and untitled at the time of the author's death, would have been the chronicle of that mission, and much else besides. The three chapters left on O'Brian's desk at the time of his death are presented here both in printed version-including his corrections to the typescript-and a facsimile of his manuscript, which goes several pages beyond the end of the typescript to include a duel between Stephen Maturin and an impertinent officer who is courting his fiancee. Of course we would rather have had the whole story; instead we have this proof that O'Brian's powers of observation, his humor, and his understanding of his characters were undiminished to the end. 651 0 $a Great Britain $x History, Naval $y 19th century $v Fiction. 650 0 $a Maturin, Stephen (Fictitious character) $v Fiction. 650 0 $a Aubrey, Jack (Fictitious character) $v Fiction. 650 0 $a British $z South Africa $v Fiction. 650 0 $a Ship physicians $v Fiction. 651 0 $a South Africa $v Fiction. 650 0 $a Admirals $v Fiction. 600 10 $a O'Brian, Patrick, $d 1914-2000 $v Facsimiles. $v Facsimiles. 655 7 $a Historical fiction. $2 gsafd 655 7 $a Sea stories. $2 gsafd 700 1 $a Snow, Richard. 800 1 $a O'Brian, Patrick, $d 1914-2000. $t Aubrey/Maturin novels ; $v Bk.21. 941 $a 2 952 $l GZPE631 $d 20240305014003.0 952 $l GBPF771 $d 20240202021809.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=3E3939FC952411E7A6BEDC2A97128E48 994 $a C0 $b IW3Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
