"The following narrative is one of five inter-woven in that attractive juvenile book entitled, 'Ministering children.' The large size and consequent expensiveness of the volume exclude it in great measure from the libraries of Sabbath schools, and from many a household, where otherwise it would be a welcome and useful inmate. To obviate this, the different threads of the story have in the present edition been separated, and published in four distinct volumes. ... A few expressions, not readily understood by American readers, have been altered, and a few unimportant passages omitted. The order of arrangement has of course been changed to fit the work for its present use."--Prefatory note, pages 3-4. Parentheses substituted for square brackets in title transcription. Maria Charlesworth wrote "Ministering children" in 1854. Cf. New Cambridge bibl. of Eng. lit., volumes 3, 1800-1900, 1974, page 1091. The American Antiquarian Society copy bears an owner's inscription dated 1864. In blue cloth. ATS monogram blind-stamped on covers. Wood-engravings variously signed by John N. Hyde, Nathaniel Rudd, and S. Cloues.
