Summary:
Jonno has won an essay writing competition, and his prize is a trip to South America to watch a total eclipse of the sun. When Jonno arrives he notices more about the country he is visiting than the eclipse, as a group of local people, the NUF, are protesting against the government. Armed soldiers are also walking the streets and there are reports of violence and death on both sides. Jonno is looking forward to returning to the safety of home but when he and his fellow travellers get on an aeroplane, their plane is hijacked by members of the NUF. Suggested level: intermediate, junior secondary.
