Survival rates have been increasing for patient diagnosed with cancer. Many patients receive chemotherapy aspart of their cancer treatment. Patients are often unaware of side-effects they may experience from chemotherapy. The purpose of this project is to educate health care professionals on the long-termside effects of chemotherapy treatment. Fifty charts of patients who previously received chemotherapy were reviewd. A chart review log lists type of chemotherapy agent, side effects experienced and documentation of teaching. An in-service was given to nurses and physicians regarding long-term chemotherapy side effects and teaching patients prior to treatment. A one month follow-up review of charts showed improved teaching on both short and long-term side effects. A teaching flow sheet was implemented successfully for all new patients receiving chemotherapy with documentation ot teaching on chemotherapy side-effects.
