Summary:
It's the late 80s and 7 years since Diamond's father disappeared, and her mother is ready to declare him legally dead in order to collect the life insurance and improve their lives. Before that happens, Diamond receives a letter from a relative she's never met, and she goes from being the only Black person in Swift River to becoming part of a family of African American women whose lives span the 20th century.
