The backdrop was Portugal's increasingly embattled Estado Novo regime, and its attendant use of the players as propaganda to communicate the supposed unity of the metropole and the colonies. Cleveland zeroes in on the ways that players, such as the great Eusebio, creatively exploited opportunities generated by shifts in the political and occupational landscapes in the waning decades of Portugal's empire. Drawing on interviews with the players themselves, he shows how they often assumed roles as social and cultural intermediaries and counters reductive histories that have depicted footballers as mere colonial pawns. To reconstruct these players' transnational histories, the narrative traces their lives from the informal soccer spaces in colonial Africa to the manicured pitches of Europe, while simultaneously focusing on their off-the-field challenges and successes. By examining this multi-continental space in a single analytical field, the book unearths structural and experiential consistencies and contrasts, and illuminates the components and processes of empire. 650 0 $a Soccer $z Portugal $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Soccer players $z Africa, Portuguese-speaking $x History $y 20th century. 651 0 $a Portugal $x History $x History $y 20th century. 650 7 $a HISTORY / Africa / General. $2 bisacsh 650 7 $a SPORTS & RECREATION / History. $2 bisacsh 650 7 $a POLITICAL SCIENCE / Colonialism & Post-Colonialism. $2 bisacsh 650 7 $a SOCIAL SCIENCE / Emigration & Immigration. $2 bisacsh 650 7 $a SPORTS & RECREATION / Soccer. $2 bisacsh 650 7 $a Emigration and immigration. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00908690 650 7 $a Soccer. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01122119 650 7 $a Soccer players. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01122208 651 7 $a Africa, Portuguese-speaking. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01692607 651 7 $a Portugal. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01208476 648 7 $a 1900-1999 $2 fast 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 830 0 $a Research in international studies. $p Global and comparative studies series ; $v no. 16. 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20231019014506.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=8E442F40840911E89478B85797128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
