A group of literary scholars, inspired by Western thought, turned to the study and revitalization of folklore--popular songs, beliefs, and customs--to rally the people around the flag during an era of deep postwar disillusionment. "Saving the Nation through Culture" opens a new chapter in the world history of the folklore movement by exploring the origins and evolution of the discipline's Chinese branch. Gao reveals that intellectuals in the New Culture Movement influenced the founding folklorists with their aim to repudiate Confucianism following the Chinese Republic's failure to modernize the nation. The folklorists, however, faced a unique challenge--advocating for modern academic methods and constructions while upholding folklore as the key to the nation's salvation. Largely unknown in the West and underappreciated in China, the Modern Folklore Movement failed to achieve its goal of reinvigorating the Chinese nation. But it helped establish a modern discipline, promoting a spirit of academic independence that continues to influence Chinese intellectuals today."-- $c Provided by publisher. 530 $a Issued also in electronic format. 650 0 $a Folklore $z China $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Folklore $x History $z China $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Folklore and nationalism $z China $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Social movements $z China $x History $y 20th century. 651 0 $a China $x Intellectual life $y 20th century. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85024144 650 6 $a Folklore $z Chine $x Histoire $y 20e sieÌcle. 650 6 $a Folklore $x Histoire $z Chine $x Histoire $y 20e sieÌcle. 650 6 $a Folklore et nationalisme $z Chine $x Histoire $y 20e sieÌcle. 650 6 $a Mouvements sociaux $z Chine $x Histoire $y 20e sieÌcle. 651 6 $a Chine $x Vie intellectuelle $y 20e sieÌcle. 650 7 $a Folklore. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00930306 650 7 $a Folklore and nationalism. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00930365 650 7 $a Folklore $x Political aspects. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00930338 650 7 $a Intellectual life. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00975769 650 7 $a Social movements. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01122657 651 7 $a China. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01206073 648 7 $a 1900-1999 $2 fast 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 1 $a Gao, Jie, 1977-, author. $t Saving the nation through culture.: $d Vancouver ; Toronto : UBC Press, 2019. $k Contemporary Chinese studies $k Contemporary Chinese studies $w (CaOONL)20189058374 776 08 $i Online version: $a Gao, Jie, 1977- $t Saving the nation through culture. $d Vancouver ; Toronto : UBC Press, 2019 $z 9780774838405 $z 9780774838405 $w (OCoLC)1080207897 830 0 $a Contemporary Chinese studies. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n98000470 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20191211024940.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=36D105D60CF611EA99B9112E97128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
