Along with a group of drawings from the 1940s, in which pendulous forms are delineated in black ink, the selection of works traces the theme of suspension throughout Bourgeois's long career. Spanning more than forty-five years -- from the organic Lair forms of the early 1960s and the Janus series of 1968, to the cloth figures of the 1990s, the hanging heads of the 2000s, and the torqued spirals of shining aluminum made in the last years of Bourgeois's life -- they demonstrate the myriad ways in which she approached material, form, and scale. They also affirm the various readings of Bourgeois's work, whether forma, physhological, biographical, or experiential. For Bourgeois, the sculptures' suspension is an expression of the psyche; as she stated: "Horizontality is a desire to give up, to sleep. Verticality is an attempt to escape. Hanging and floating are states of ambivalence." In psychology, ambivalence refers to conflicting but coexisting feelings for the same person, place, or event. The many dualities at play within Bourgeois's oeuvre (organic/geometric; ridig/pliable; male/female) provide this condition with fertile ground. -- Cheim & Read website. 600 10 $a Bourgeois, Louise, $d 1911-2010 $v Exhibitions. 600 17 $a Bourgeois, Louise, $d 1911-2010. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01752885 600 17 $a Bourgeois, Louise $d 1911-2010 $2 gnd $0 (DE-588)118943375 600 14 $a Bourgeois, Louise, $d 1911- 650 0 $a Sculpture, American $y 20th century $v Exhibitions. 650 0 $a Sculpture, American $y 21st century $v Exhibitions. 650 7 $a Sculpture, American. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01109531 650 7 $a Skulptur. $2 sao 648 7 $a 1945- $2 sao 648 7 $a 1900-2099 $2 fast 653 11 $a Bourgeois, Louise 655 7 $a Exhibition catalogs. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01424028 655 7 $a Illustrated works. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01423873 655 7 $a Exhibition catalogs. $2 lcgft 655 7 $a Illustrated works. $2 lcgft 700 1 $a Pincus-Witten, Robert, $e contributor. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n50014506 710 2 $a Cheim & Read, $e host institution. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/nr99000061 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20191126023645.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=0664664A101B11EA8DA14E4D97128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
