Perez interrogates the assumption that after 1957, when the Franco regime recast itself in a secular and modernizing fashion, religion vanished from the cultural field. Instead, Spanish cinema addressed the transformation within Spanish Catholicism following Vatican II and Spain's modernization processes. Confessional Cinema offers the first analysis of a neglected body of Spanish films, "nun films," which focus on the active role of religious women in the transformation of Spanish Catholicism. Perez argues that commercial films, despite being less aesthetically accomplished, delved more than oppositional, art-house films into the fluctuating zeitgeist of the development years regarding the transformations within Spanish Catholicism. This is a provocative and original analysis of the significance of religion not from a theological point of view, but rather as a socio-political force and cultural determinant in the Spanish public sphere of this period, known as desarrollismo (development years) from 1960-1975"-- $c Provided by publisher. 610 20 $a Catholic Church $x In motion pictures. 650 0 $a Religion in motion pictures. 650 0 $a Motion pictures $z Spain $x History. 650 0 $a Motion pictures $x Catholic Church. $x Catholic Church. 651 0 $a Spain $x Religion $y 20th century. 651 0 $a Spain $x Intellectual life $y 20th century. 651 0 $a Spain $x History $y 1939-1975. 650 0 $a Nuns in motion pictures. 650 0 $a Women in motion pictures. 830 0 $a Toronto Iberic ; $v 24. 941 $a 3 952 $l PQAX094 $d 20231214050655.0 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20180710065657.0 952 $l USUX851 $d 20171003032038.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=B26C9DC4A80111E7B9D4614397128E48 994 $a C0 $b IWAInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
