Summary:
"Part of Pompeii's fascination derives from the discovery that in essence its citizens were human beings like us. We experience a somewhat childish amazement at recognizing ourselves in the people of antiquity... We must also emphasize, however, that the past interests us primarily because it is not like the present, because it allows us to reconstruct the distance, the difference-and therefore an historical perspective-no only in terms of the past, but also of the future. If things are different today, it is a sign that tomorrow too may be different-and perhaps even better! The world is not the same everywhere, nor is man ever the same as in the past. We hope that this book may contribute to re-establishing this elementary truth." from the back cover.
