Sixteen-year-old Ronald Oliver -- known on the streets of New Orleans as Ronnie Slim -- sobbed as he looked in the mirror. "Who are you?" he asked himself. "Who have you become?" It was Christmas Day 1991 and Ronald had just committed murder. Sentenced to life without parole, Ronald was sent to the notorious Louisiana State Penitentiary, known as Angola. Through the agony of solitary confinement, the violence of inmates and guards, and his own feelings of shame and regret, Ronald held on to the words his mother once told him: "Baby, if you ever have real trouble, the kind that I can't get you out of, you can always call on Jesus." So, he did.
