Summary:
This illustrated book provides a fascinating insight into the costumes and fabrics of the Tudor and Stuart age. Detailing both the leading fashions of the day and the appeal to painters of timeless classical dress, this book considers both those who led taste and the influence of international fashions of the period.
An exploration of the social history behind Tudor and Stuart costume, tracing changing tastes in fashionable attire in Great Britain in the 16th and 17th centuries. Compares portraits by such artists as Holbein, van Dyck, Rembrandt, and Lely with rare surviving examples of original clothing from the period, and investigates the processes of personal image-making. Paintings, engravings, and informal drawings are supplemented by social commentaries of the time, official records, and intimate domestic notes and diaries, as well as the garments themselves. Includes men's, women's, and children's clothing, fantastical dress and military attire; excludes ceremonial, ecclesiastical, clerical, legal attire and household livery.
