520 3 $a Advances in technology and health care have allowed chronically ill children to live longer, and reside in their homes. A child with chronic illness and dependent on technology affects the whole family, causing shifts in member roles and responsibilities, and family dynamics. Parents must develop necessary technical, assessment, decision-making, and care coordination skills to meet their child's unique medical, psychosocial, developmental, and emotional needs, and family equilibrium. Healthcare providers need to recognize each family's unique perspective and experience of caring for a child dependent on technology. This research project explores how parents perceive this experience of caring for a child dependent on technology. This research project explores how parents perceive this experience, identifies factors impacting their ability to care for their child and family, and provides recommendations for healthcare providers to help achieve the goal of truly family-centered care.
