Summary:
The austerity of life in post-occupation Japan takes center stage in this film about a mother's struggle to provide for her children. Haruko was widowed by the war, and after losing the family land to an abusive brother-in-law, she has kept her family fed by selling black market goods and working as a prostitute in the pleasure quarters. But her son Seiichi is a medical student, and her daughter Utako is a highly desirable marriage candidate who speaks fluent English. When she learns that her son wants to be adopted by a wealthy couple, and her daughter is running away with a married man, Haruko's world crumbles. Her struggles have been in vain, as her family is overtaken by an interminable and irreconcilable tragedy.
