"Former Texas Ranger Clay Orde was looking for a man. There was only one thing on his mind -- revenge. He'd been following a cold trail from Oregon to Nevada, but his experience as a ranger and what he had learned about Silver Jack Devaney assured him that he was going in the right direction. Fate intervenes when he thwarts a freight train robbery and becomes acquainted with Milly Ewell. Milly Ewell runs a mule freighting business she inherited when her father disappeared. She mentions that the robbery was an attempt by Devaney to force her out of business. When he confirms her adversary is the same Silver Jack Devaney, Orde offers to help her get the pack mules home to Vermillion. Vermillion was a tough, raw Nevada frontier town where murderous hatreds smoldered and where killers walked the streets without fear of the law. There was no law in Vermillion, not even a sheriff.
