Summary:
French philosopher Michel Serres offers a critical analysis of the œuvre of Jules Verne, through an iconography of images, maps, film extracts, and interviews. Serres shows that, in the "Voyages Extraordinaires" (1862-1905), which cover the Atlas and the Encyclopedia of Science from the turn of the century, Verne anticipated the world to come. Verne's tales of global travels exhibit the knowledge, myth and power to dream that were characteristic of a man ahead of his time.
