A petite, young Asian Canadian soprano named Charise Lee is stabbed in the heart during rehearsals at the Washington National Opera. Georgetown law professor Mac Smith and his beloved Annabel are pressured by the opera board to work with former homicide detective Raymond Pawkins to find the killer. What they find is an increasingly complex case reaching far beyond Washington to a dark world of informers and terror alerts in Iraq, and climaxing on a fateful night when the President himself is attending the Opera.
