In the summer of 1951, eighteen-year-old Miranda Schuyler arrives on elite, secretive Winthrop Island in Long Island Sound. Uneasy among her stepsister's privileged friends, Miranda finds herself drawn to Joseph, who helps his father on a lobster boat.
