Notes:
Title supplied by cataloger. Ten panel palm leaf "book" depicting variations on the tree of life, etched on a palm leaf in the Tala-patrachitras method. There are 12 etchings of the tree of life, within circular borders, with floral ornaments connecting each etching to each other; all surrounded by decorative floral and leaf/vine border. Each "folio" or section is made from a double-layer of palm leaf, specifically folded and dried to be cut away, leaving raised shapes. "Artist name: Surendra Sahu. These mss [manuscripts] have been made by the artist who is from Orrisa/Odisha in India. They are made throughout the year but specifically sold and made during a festival called Janmashtami. It is all about Krishna. The making is an act of devotion. According to the artist, these are usually hung all around the temple, but people would also buy them and hang them in their homes" --Email from Radha Pandey. "The leaves are treated with tumeric after they undergo multiple processing steps. Then they are incised using metal stylii, freehand and rubbed with carbon black, and then cleaned off with water and a cloth" --Email from Radha Pandey. "One of the special features about this mss [manuscript] is that each 'folio' consists of a palm leaf that is usually chosen for the first and last 'section'. It is a thicker leaf because each leaf is folded in on itself along its spine as it was dried, making it 2-ply. This is usually used for the first and last sections because it is thicker and stronger in lieu of wooden covers. But in this case, each folio is this specific double-leaf so that the top layer can be cut away after the incising has been done. (This is something done in many manuscripts either as the main form of decoration or just for the borders.)" --Email from Radha Pandey.
