Summary:
Otto, the teddy bear of the title, has his first owner deported to a concentration camp, then lives through the bombing of his city, then is shot at the same time that the American GI who picks him up is shot. They recuperate together in the hospital, and he is given to the daughter of the GI when they return to the US. He is stolen from the little girl and abused mightily by a group of rough boys, ending up in the dumpster. From there he is rescued by a poor and/or homeless woman, ends up in the window of an antique shop, and is reunited with both of his original friends (the Jewish and gentile boys who originally played with him) as they are reunited. As they recount the happenings of the last 40ish years we learn that David's parents were gassed and he nearly starved in the concentration camp, and Oskar's were killed on the front and in the bombings, respectively. The pictures depict dead and dying people, soldiers, guns, cities destroyed by bombs. No pictures of the camps.
