"Silvermane" tells the story of two mustangers trying to capture a wild stallion in the Sevier range country. The next three stories are restored texts taken from the author's handwritten manuscripts. "Tappan's Burro" tells of the life of a desert prospector and his burro, Jenet, as they flee across Death Valley to escape claim jumpers, while "Canon Walls" is the story of outlaw Smoke Bellew who enters a remote Mormon settlement just ahead of a posse and finds his life transformed by a dowager Mormon rancher and her wanton daughter. Jane Stacey is "From Missouri", a schoolteacher persuaded to come West by love letters from someone named Frank Owens but pursued by the lecherous Beady Jones who has his own ideas of how to introduce the comely schoolmarm to the wild West.
