The term was widely used by critics and the public at the time, and was an unexamined, unquestioned category for the work of non-whites (such as Johnson, an African American), non-Westerners (such as Kuniyoshi, a Japanese-born American), and ethnicized non-Christians (such as Weber, a Russian-born Jewish American). The discourse on racial art is a troubling chapter in the history of early American modernism that has not, until now, been sufficiently documented. Jacqueline Francis juxtaposes the work of these three artists in order to consider their understanding of the category and their stylistic responses to the expectations created by it, in the process revealing much about the nature of modernist art practices. Most American audiences in the interwar period disapproved of figural abstraction and held modernist painting in contempt, yet the critics who first expressed appreciation for Johnson, Kuniyoshi, and Weber praised their bright palettes and energetic pictures--and expected to find the residue of the minority artist's heritage in the work itself. Francis explores the flowering of racial art rhetoric in criticism and history published in the 1920s and 1930s, and analyzes its underlying presence in contemporary discussions of artists of color. Making Race is a history of a past phenomenon which has ramifications for the present. Jacqueline Francis is a senior lecturer at the California College of the Arts"--Provided by publisher. 520 $a "A comparative history of New York expressionist painters Malvin Gray Johnson (1896-1934), Yasuo Kuniyoshi (1893-1953), and Max Weber (1881-1961)"--Provided by publisher. 504 $a Includes bibliographical references (p. 155-236) and index. 500 $a New Book -- August -- 2013 650 0 $a Modernism (Art) $z United States. 650 0 $a Painting, American $y 20th century. 600 10 $a Johnson, Malvin Gray, $d 1896-1934 $x Criticism and interpretation. 600 10 $a Kuniyoshi, Yasuo, $d 1889-1953 $x Criticism and interpretation. 600 10 $a Weber, Max, $d 1881-1961 $x Criticism and interpretation. 650 0 $a Art criticism $z United States $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Art and race. 650 7 $a ART / American / African American. $2 bisacsh 650 7 $a ART / American / Asian American. $2 bisacsh 650 7 $a SOCIAL SCIENCE / Ethnic Studies / General. $2 bisacsh 600 17 $a Johnson, Malvin Gray, $d 1896-1934. $0 (DE-588)1021166162 $2 gnd 600 17 $a Kuniyoshi, Yasuo, $d 1889-1953. $0 (DE-588)118725416 $2 gnd 600 17 $a Weber, Max, $d 1881-1961. $0 (DE-588)118834010 $2 gnd 650 07 $a EthnizitaÌt (Motiv) $0 (DE-588)4438896-2 $2 gnd 650 07 $a KuÌnstler. $0 (DE-588)4033423-5 $2 gnd 650 07 $a Malerei. $0 (DE-588)4037220-0 $2 gnd 650 07 $a Minderheit. $0 (DE-588)4752223-9 $2 gnd 651 7 $a New York, NY. $0 (DE-588)4042011-5 $2 gnd 648 7 $a Geschichte 1920-1940. $2 swd 648 4 $a Geschichte 1920-1940. 856 42 $3 Cover image $u http://www.netread.com/jcusers/1305/2465478/image/lgcover.3140359.jpg 856 41 $z Available to Stanford-affiliated users. $u http://site.ebrary.com/lib/stanford/Doc?id=10524428 $y ebrary $x ebebr10524428 $x subscribed $x eLoaderURL $x eb4 $x ebebr10524428 941 $a 2 952 $l PNAX964 $d 20200829012453.0 952 $l UXAX826 $d 20150507032822.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=FD0F4A480A2611E3A530ACDCDAD10320 994 $a C0 $b IX2Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
