By analyzing the scant visual evidence in the context of East Asian visual art of the period, the author recreates the subject represented on the seventh century artifact and demonstrates that it was not Buddhist (as previously believed), but associated with the funerary iconography of China that arrived in Japan with immigrants from the Korean peninsula. In addition, by closely investigating the context for the compilation of each of the documents associated with the artifact, Pradel illuminates the history of the embroidery and its changing significance and perception over the centuries. 630 00 $6 880-01 $a Tenjukoku shuÌchoÌ mandara. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2016064459 880 04 $6 630-01 $a 天寿å½ç¹å¸³æ¼è¼ç¾ . 600 00 $6 880-02 $a ShoÌtoku Taishi, $d 574?-622? $v Art. 880 04 $6 600-02 $a è徳太å, $d 574?-622 $v Art. 610 20 $6 880-03 $a ChuÌguÌji (Ikaruga-choÌ, Nara-ken, Japan) $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n82115554 880 24 $6 610-03 $a ä¸å®®å¯º 650 0 $a Embroidery $z Japan $x History. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85042706 650 0 $a Textile fabrics $z Japan $x History. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85134333 650 0 $a Textile design $z Japan $x History. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85134315 650 0 $a Art, Japanese $z Ikaruga-choÌ (Nara-ken) $z Ikaruga-choÌ (Nara-ken) 650 0 $a Art, Japanese $x Chinese influences. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85007735 830 0 $a Japanese visual culture ; $v v. 17. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2011020393 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20171220022432.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=120056CEE55411E7AFB0C42A97128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
