520 8 $a The most celebrated horror story ever written. The dreadful tale of Victor Frankenstein, a visionary young student of natural philosophy, who discovers the secret of life. In the grip of his obsession he constructs and animates a creature from dead body parts - with catastrophic results.
500 $a "Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus is publication no. 115 in the Arion Press catalogue. The book was designed and produced in San Francisco by the staff--Brian Ferrett, Megan Gibes, Christ Godek, Jeffrey Raymond, and Blake Riley--with assistance from Samantha Companatico, Sarah Lariviere, Beth McLaughlin, Nathalie Roland, Sara Songer, and Rochelle Youk. The typeface for the text is Monotype Bulmer. Designs for the Roman and Italic were commissioned from the Shakespeare Printing Office of William Bulmer ... To achieve the requisite "splendour of production," a new typeface was ordered for the project and cut by William Martin. Rudolf Koch's Eve has been handset for display. The type and artwork have been printed by letterpress. The paper was milled in Italy at Magnani ... The artwork for the slipcases is a detail modified by the artist from his work on paper "Crow's Nest", 1998. The standard edition, housed in a cloth and imprinted paper slipcase, is limited to 220 copies for sale and twenty-six lettered copies hors de commerce. An additional thirty copies and five printer's proofs are bound in a deluxe edition and accompanied by an extra print of the Frankenstein family crest. All copies of the book and the extra print are signed by the artist."--Colophon.
