DeLoughrey traces how indigenous and postcolonial peoples in the Caribbean and Pacific Islands grapple with the enormity of colonialism and anthropogenic climate change through art, poetry, and literature. In these works, authors and artists use allegory as a means to understand the multiscalar complexities of the Anthropocene and to critique the violence of capitalism, militarism, and the postcolonial state. DeLoughrey examines the work of a wide range of artists and writers-including poets Kamau Brathwaite and Kathy Jetnil-Kijiner, Dominican installation artist Tony Capellan, and authors Keri Hulme and Erna Brodber-whose work addresses Caribbean plantations, irradiated Pacific atolls, global flows of waste, and allegorical representations of the ocean and the island. In examining how island writers and artists address the experience of finding themselves at the forefront of the existential threat posed by climate change, DeLoughrey demonstrates how the Anthropocene and empire are mutually constitutive and establishes the vital importance of allegorical art and literature in understanding our global environmental crisis. 504 $a Includes bibliographical references and index. 505 0 $a Introduction: allegories of the Anthropocene -- Gendering earth: excavating plantation soil -- Planetarity: militarized radiations -- Accelerations: globalization and states of waste -- Oceanic futures: interspecies worldings -- An island is a world. 648 7 $a 2000-2099 $2 fast 650 0 $a Climatic changes $x Effect of human beings on. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2007004712 650 0 $a Climatic changes in literature. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2011000451 650 0 $a Human ecology in art. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh96011794 650 0 $a Caribbean literature $y 21st century $x Themes, motives. 650 0 $a Pacific Island literature $y 21st century $x Themes, motives. 650 0 $a Art, Caribbean $y 21st century $x Themes, motives. 650 0 $a Art, Pacific Island $y 21st century $x Themes, motives. 650 0 $a Postcolonialism in literature. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002010213 650 0 $a Postcolonialism and the arts. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2001001629 650 0 $a Climatic changes $x Social aspects $z Caribbean Area. 650 0 $a Climatic changes $x Social aspects $z Islands of the Pacific. 650 7 $a Climatic changes $x Effect of human beings on. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01766583 650 7 $a Climatic changes in literature. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01902821 650 7 $a Climatic changes $x Social aspects. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00864268 650 7 $a Human ecology in art. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00962997 650 7 $a Pacific Island literature $x Themes, motives. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01049962 650 7 $a Postcolonialism and the arts. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01073034 650 7 $a Postcolonialism in literature. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01073035 651 7 $a Caribbean Area. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01244080 651 7 $a Pacific Ocean $z Islands of the Pacific. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01244201 776 08 $i Online version: $a DeLoughrey, Elizabeth M., 1967- author. $t Allegories of the Anthropocene $d Durham : Duke University Press, 2019 $z 9781478005582 $w (DLC) 2019006483 941 $a 2 952 $l PLAX964 $d 20240724074323.0 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20191211030558.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=7E3B98B21BE411EA82BF083097128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
