Because there were no black voters in Mississippi in 1961, the organizers of the voter project created their own party, the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, and recruited mostly white students to come to Mississippi to join in their cause. The party organized a delegation and attended the 1964 Democratic National Convention among much controversy.
