Caleb McDaniel focuses on the experience of a freed slave who was sold back into slavery, eventually freed again, and who then sued the man who had sold her back into bondage. Henrietta Wood was born into slavery, but in 1848, she was taken to Cincinnati and legally freed. In 1855, however, a wealthy Kentucky businessman named Zebulon Ward, who colluded with Wood's employer, abducted Wood and sold her back into bondage. In the years that followed before and during the Civil War, she gave birth to a son and was forced to march to Texas. She obtained her freedom a second time after the war and returned to Cincinnati, where she sued Ward for $20,000 in damages--now known as reparations. Astonishingly, after ten years of litigation, Henrietta Wood won her case. In 1878, a Federal jury awarded her $2,500 and the decision stuck on appeal. While nowhere close to the amount she had demanded, this may be the largest amount of money ever awarded by an American court in restitution for slavery. Wood went on to live until 1912"-- $c Provided by publisher. 600 10 $a Wood, Henrietta, $d approximately 1818-1912. 600 10 $a Wood, Henrietta, $d approximately 1818-1912 $v Trials, litigation, etc. 648 7 $a 1800-1899 $2 fast 650 0 $a Slaves $z Kentucky $v Biography. 650 0 $a Women slaves $z Kentucky $v Biography. 650 0 $a Freedmen $z Cincinnati $z Cincinnati $v Biography. 650 0 $a Trials (Kidnapping) $z Cincinnati. $z Cincinnati. 650 0 $a African Americans $x History $x History $y 19th century. 650 7 $a African Americans $x Reparations. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00799691 650 7 $a Freedmen. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00933987 650 7 $a Slaves. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01120522 650 7 $a Trials (Kidnapping) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01156356 650 7 $a Women slaves. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01178532 651 7 $a Kentucky. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204494 651 7 $a Ohio $z Cincinnati. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01205142 655 7 $a Biography. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01423686 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 655 7 $a Trials, litigation, etc. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01423712 655 7 $a Biographies. $2 lcgft 941 $a 14 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20231117020607.0 952 $l TYPH572 $d 20230902014343.0 952 $l GAAX314 $d 20221221010049.0 952 $l USUX851 $d 20221005020150.0 952 $l CEAX572 $d 20210728010950.0 952 $l GEPG771 $d 20210722063158.0 952 $l HUAX887 $d 20210702114437.0 952 $l WHPE115 $d 20210323033119.0 952 $l FYPI314 $d 20210302015324.0 952 $l KSPG296 $d 20210227010725.0 952 $l PMAX975 $d 20210212103512.0 952 $l CAPH522 $d 20200804014631.0 952 $l GDPF771 $d 20200730010726.0 952 $l UQAX771 $d 20200319010337.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=BFDF3366CFA211E9B77D544F97128E48 994 $a C0 $b C@VInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
