During these years witches were thought to be evil people who used magical power to inflict physical harm or misfortune on their neighbours. Witches were also believed to have made pacts with the devil and sometimes to have worshipped him at nocturnal assemblies known as sabbaths. These beliefs provided the basis for defining witchcraft as a secular and ecclesiastical crime and prosecuting tens of thousands of women and men for this offence. The trials resulted in as many as fifty thousand executions. These essays study the rise and fall of witchcraft prosecutions in the various kingdoms and territories of Europe and in English, Spanish, and Portuguese colonies in the Americas. 500 $a New Book -- April -- 2014 650 0 $a Witch hunting $x History. 650 0 $a Trials (Witchcraft) $x History. 650 0 $a Witchcraft $x History. 650 7 $a Trials (Witchcraft) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01156425 650 7 $a Witch hunting. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01747420 650 7 $a Witchcraft. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01176327 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 700 1 $a Levack, Brian P., $e editor. 830 0 $a Oxford handbooks. 856 48 $i Table of contents. $u http://www.oxfordhandbooks.com/view/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199578160.001.0001/oxfordhb-9780199578160. 856 42 $3 Contributor biographical information $u http://catdir.loc.gov/catdir/enhancements/fy1404/2013474152-b.html 856 42 $3 Publisher description $u http://catdir.loc.gov/catdir/enhancements/fy1404/2013474152-d.html 941 $a 6 952 $l PLAX964 $d 20240724071927.0 952 $l PQAX094 $d 20231214045441.0 952 $l USUX851 $d 20230302014745.0 952 $l GAAX314 $d 20150902015604.0 952 $l OIAX792 $d 20140917013213.0 952 $l PNAX964 $d 20140430010432.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=BC8F20D4D02C11E38B82EDD5DAD10320 994 $a C0 $b IX2Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
