In ghettos at night and under the scrutiny of inquisitions, Jews flourished. Life and learning were enriched by Jews from the Iberian Peninsula, the Ottoman Empire, transalpine Europe, west and east, and Catholic neighbors. Rabbinic discourse represented conflicting customs in family formation and dissolution, especially at moments of crisis for women: forced betrothal; physical, mental and financial abuse; polygamy, and abandonment. In this book, case studies illustrate the ambiguity, drama, and danger to which women were exposed, as well as opportunities to make their voices heard and to extricate themselves from situations by forcing a divorce, collecting or seizing assets, and going to Catholic notaries to bequeath their assets outside traditional inheritance, often to other women. Despite intrusion by rabbis, their ability for coercion was limited, and their threats of punishments reflected the rhetoric of weakness rather than realistic options for implementation. The focus of this text is not what the law says, but rather how it enabled individual Jews, especially women, to speak and to act"-- $c Provided by publisher. 650 0 $a Jewish marriage customs and rites $z Italy $x History $y 17th century. 650 0 $a Judaism $z Italy $x History $y 17th century. 650 7 $a Jewish marriage customs and rites. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01730509 650 7 $a Judaism. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00984280 651 7 $a Italy. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204565 650 4 $a Jews $z Italy $x History $y 1500-1800. 650 4 $a Jewish women $z Italy $x Social conditions. 651 4 $a Italy $x History $y 1492-1870. 648 7 $a 1600-1699 $2 fast 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 776 08 $i Online version: $a Adelman, Howard Tzvi. $t Women and Jewish marriage negotiations in early modern Italy. $b First edition. $d New York : Routledge, 2018 $z 9781351168083 $w (DLC) 2017058194 830 0 $a Routledge research in early modern history. 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20191211020848.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=AD7CCD32840811E89478B85797128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
