It addresses an important gap in contemporary Canadian literary criticism by focusing specifically on their short fiction. This book is the first work to address this cohort of authors in textual dialogue with one another. Drawing on narratological and formalist theory, including an interpretation of Bakhtin's important discussion of the "dialogical" nature of fiction, the author examines the multiple ways and means whereby this "double-voicing" manifests itself in the authors' stories. In the broadest sense, it operates at the level of theme, in representational or philosophical ironizing of dominant societal discourses and hegemonic values. This then opens up the question of who speaks--how is the "vision" conveyed by the "voice" of the story?--which the author terms thematics of focalization. This choice shapes the literary mode, or style, of the story, including the "double-voicing" created through irony, satire and parody. Finally, at the discursive or linguistic level, "double-voicing" appears in terms of the dialogizing of language itself. Neither programmatic nor reductive, the author's approach offers a thoughtful juxtaposition of select stories on themes of gender, mothers and sons, family storytelling, marriage, sexuality, and (the politics of) identity in order to show their distinctive "double-voicing" of these issues and relationships. As a multi-author study, its scope is broad and its readings valuable to Canadian literature as a whole, making the book of interest to students of Canadian literature or the short story, and to readers of both."-- $c Provided by publisher. 530 $a Issued also in electronic format. 505 0 $a Hands and mirrors : reflections on gender in the short stories of MacLeod and Findley -- Mothering sons : stories by Findley, Hodgins, and MacLeod uncover the mother's double voice -- Storykeepers : doubling family voice in stories by King, Senior, MacLeod, and Vanderhaeghe -- Pinking the triangle, drawing the circle : double-voicing family in Findley's short fictions -- Various otherness : Shields, King, Hodgins, and Birdsell double-voice the short story -- Innovation and reflection in the new millennium : the double voice in Shield's short fiction -- Double-voicing through the mariposan looking glass -- L'Envoi : the bus to North Bay. 600 17 $a Englisch, ... $2 gnd $0 (DE-588)138518394 600 07 $a KanÌ£ada $2 gnd $0 (DE-588)158621662 650 5 $a Short stories, Canadian (English) $x History and criticism. 650 5 $a Canadian fiction (English) $y 20th century $x History and criticism. 650 6 $a Nouvelles canadiennes-anglaises $x Histoire et critique. 650 6 $a Roman canadien-anglais $y 20e sieÌcle $x Histoire et critique. 650 0 $a Short stories, Canadian $x History and criticism. 650 0 $a Canadian fiction $y 21st century $x History and criticism. 650 7 $a Canadian fiction. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00845101 650 7 $a Short stories, Canadian. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01117131 650 7 $a Kurzgeschichte $2 gnd $0 (DE-588)4033842-3 648 7 $a 2000-2099 $2 fast 655 7 $a Criticism, interpretation, etc. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411635 776 1 $a Kruk, Laurie, 1962-, author. $t Double-voicing the Canadian short story.: $d Ottawa : University of Ottawa Press, 2016. $k Canadian literature collection $k Canadian literature collection $w (CaOONL)20169028038 830 0 $a Canadian literature collection. 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20231017011826.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=758C469A840911E89478B85797128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
