Summary:
This study was initiated by the Iowa State Highway Commission to develop a system for the inventory and evaluation of traffic control devices located on the Iowa Primary Highway System. The Primary System is composed of over 10,000 miles of highway containing approximately 200,000 signs, and 1,000 traffic signals. There are three principal types of traffic control devices considered in this study: (1) signs, (2) traffic signals, and (3) pavement markings. Five basic work elements comprised this developmental study: development of field procedures and forms, development of control device evaluation bases, development of an inventory data processing system, conduct of a pilot inventory, and recommendation for inventory implementation.
