In Don DeLillo's latest suspense-thriller, a young and ambitious filmmaker crosses paths with a war advisor who is conducting a secret war. Richard Elster, a 73-year-old reclusive scholar, was selected by the U.S. government to conceptualize troop and artillery logics for a clandestine war plan. Now, with his service completed, he meets up with a filmmaker who wants to make a documentary on Elster's experiences. However, when the story is skewed, Elster's life is plunged into chaos.
