Released from prison, Derek "Dex" Love sloughs off his identity as Stephen Crane and goes to work for his former romantic rival, Piers Garfield-Ward. The two men have only one interest in common-- Joseph, the orphaned baby of the woman whom they both loved. Together, they try to save Piers's family estate and keep Joseph from the sole custody of his grandfather, the megalomaniacal industrialist Tom Franklyn. Along the way, Dex concocts all manner of frauds and forgeries while falling for Anna, a woman on the run from her own dodgy past.
