It contains fourteen madrigals for five voices and one for seven, all composed by Gagliano. The poets represented include Giambattista Marino, Giovanbattista Strozzi, both the older and the younger, Cosimo Galletti, and Ottavio Rinuccini. The madrigals of book 5 are quite varied in their style and their treatment of text. Many are light and remarkably concise, like the canzonetta-influenced madrigals of the Quarto libro, and most often set text syllabically to shorter rhythmic values in motives that alternate between homophony (or near homophony) and polyphony, imitative or nonimitative. Some, however, set poetry very differently. A three-part setting of a Marino sonnet, for instance, is filled with virtuoso melisma, probably intended for the professional singers of the Medici court. Book 5 also includes a concertato madrigal for seven singers and basso continuo that bears the prescriptive direction "per cantare e sonare" (for voices and instruments) in the basso partbook. Although there is no notational indication of instruments, the basso part lacks text for several measures, and it is likely that it was performed with improvised chords on an instrument. The book also contains two threnodies for Count Cammillo della Gheradesca that are in a somber and more traditional polyphony and contrast with the rest of the book's contents." --Provided by publisher. 500 $a Includes introduction and critical report in English. 546 $a Italian words (texts by various poets); also printed as text with English translations: pages xv-xviii. 546 $b Staff notation. 504 $a Includes bibliographical references. 505 00 $t Altri, di beltaÌ vaga. $r (Giambattista Marino) -- $t Qui rise, o Tirsi, e qui ver me rivolse/ $r (Giambattista Marino) -- $t Fuss'io pur degno, Amore/ $r (Giovanbattista Strozzi the younger) -- $t Care pupille amate -- $t Sospir fugace e leve/ $r (Ottavio Rinuccini) -- $t Spera, infelice, spera/ $r (Cosimo Galletti) -- $t Fuggi tua speme, fuggi -- $t Mori, mi dici, e mentre/ $r (Giambattista Marino) -- $t Hor ch'io t'ho dato 'l core -- $t Felicissimo fiore -- $t Se giaÌ ritrosa mi fuggisti e schiva -- $t Su la sponda del Tebro humida herbosa/ $r (Giambattista Marino) -- $t Vattene o felic'alma -- $t Seccassi, giunta a sera, in un momento -- $t Altri, di beltaÌ vaga. 650 0 $a Madrigals, Italian $v Scores. 650 0 $a Vocal quintets, Unaccompanied $v Scores. 650 0 $a Vocal septets, Unaccompanied $v Scores. 655 7 $a Madrigals (Music) $2 lcgft $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/genreForms/gf2014026915 655 7 $a Scores. $2 lcgft $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/genreForms/gf2014027077 700 1 $a Strainchamps, Edmond, $e editor. $4 http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n82235520 830 0 $a Recent researches in the music of the Baroque Era ; $v v. 222. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n42020826 800 1 $a Gagliano, Marco da, $d 1582-1643. $t Madrigals (Strainchamps) ; $v pt.5. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2004067480 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20220317025050.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=E0450B02323411EC8B1165C359ECA4DBInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
