Lena, a cryptling, and Constance, the duke's banished daughter, must use their forbidden magic to discover who cast a spell over their homeland, shrouding it in deadly clouds and sealing it off. The treacherous storm cloud surrounding the Duke's Forest prevents most from entering or leaving the city. But when Lena learns she is a mage, and the law says all mages must die, she flees into the forest. Constance fled the city six years before, and no one believed she had survived outside the city walls. She isn't sure if she can trust anybody back at court, but is intent on reclaiming her place as the duke's daughter and heir. The two girls meet, and even after their paths diverge the storm cloud keeps them linked. Only they can dispel the storm for good-- but it may cost them everything.
