Summary:
Pasolini adapted a work by the Marquis de Sade, transplanting the setting to Salo, Mussolini's Facist holdout in northern Italy. In a vast mansion, Facists have rounded up some attractive young people to satisfy their depravities. As in earlier works, Pasolini updates a myth; here he takes the early Christian theme of the "world upside down" and gives it horrifying reality. Rank cruelty is seen as normal and sexual relations of all varieties are unmasked as merely expressions of power and violence.
