On the morning of June 1, 1921, a white mob numbering in the thousands marched across the railroad tracks dividing black from white Tulsa, Oklahoma, and obliterated a black community then celebrated as one of America's most prosperous. Thirty-four square blocks of Tulsa's Greenwood community, then known as the "Negro Wall Street of America", were reduced to smoldering rubble. And now, decades later, the death toll of what was known as the Tulsa Race Riot in more difficult to pinpoint. Conservative estimates put the number of dead at about 100 (75% of the victims are believed to be black), but the actual number of casualties could be triple that. This book recreates the town of Greenwood at the height of its prosperity; explores the currents of hatred, racism, and mistrust between Tulsa's black residents and neighboring white population; recounts the events leading up to and including the holocaust at Greenwood. Finally, it documents the subsequent silence that surrounded the tragedy. -- Publisher description. 650 0 $a African Americans $z Tulsa $z Tulsa $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a African American neighborhoods $z Tulsa $z Tulsa $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Riots $z Tulsa $z Tulsa $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Violence $z Tulsa $z Tulsa $x History $y 20th century. 651 0 $a Tulsa (Okla.) $x Race relations. 650 0 $a Racism $z Tulsa $z Tulsa $x History $y 20th century. 650 7 $a African American neighborhoods. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00799277 650 7 $a African Americans. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00799558 650 7 $a Race relations. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01086509 650 7 $a Racism. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01086616 650 7 $a Riots. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01098069 650 7 $a Violence. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01167224 651 7 $a Oklahoma $z Tulsa. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01205469 650 17 $a Rassenonlusten. $2 gtt 648 7 $a 1900-1999 $2 fast 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 941 $a 2 952 $l GOPG641 $d 20240710051806.0 952 $l MIPA194 $d 20220806014531.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=057D1D68E1E311EAA861CF0297128E48 994 $a C0 $b JIMInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
