The first was a panel, organized by Paul Maddrell, on Intelligence Leaders in International Relations at the 55th annual convention of the International Studies Association in Toronto, Canada, in March 2014. This led to a second, a conference entitled Spy Chiefs: Intelligence Leaders in History, Culture and International Relations, which was organized by Christopher Moran and his colleagues at Warwick University and held at the Palazzo Pesaro Papafava in Venice, Italy, in May of that year. The purpose of these meetings was to discuss the leadership of intelligence and security agencies; what good leadership of such agencies is and what impact it has had on the performance of the agencies concerned--Preface to volume 1. 520 $a Throughout history and across cultures, the spy chief has been an essential advisor for heads of state and the leader of the state security apparatus. In democracies, the spy chief has become a public figure, and intelligence activities have been largely brought under the rule of law. In authoritarian regimes, the spy chief was and remains a frightening and opaque figure who designs intrigue abroad and fosters repression at home. This second volume of Spy Chiefs provides a close-up look at intelligence leadership, good and bad. The contributors to the volumes try to answer the following questions: how do intelligence leaders operate in different national, institutional and historical contexts? What role have they played in the conduct of international relations? How much power do they possess? What qualities make an effective intelligence leader? How secretive and accountable to the public have they been? This book goes beyond the commonly studied spy chiefs of the United States and Britain to examine leaders from Renaissance Venice to twentieth century Russia, Germany, India, Egypt, and Lebanon. 650 0 $a Intelligence service $v Congresses. 650 0 $a Intelligence service $x History $v Congresses. 650 0 $a Espionage $v Congresses. 650 0 $a Espionage $x History $v Congresses. 650 0 $a International relations $v Congresses. 650 0 $a Leadership $v Congresses. $v Congresses. 650 6 $a Service des renseignements $v CongreÌs. 650 6 $a Service des renseignements $x Histoire $v CongreÌs. 650 6 $a Espionnage $v CongreÌs. 650 6 $a Espionnage $x Histoire $v CongreÌs. 650 6 $a Relations internationales $v CongreÌs. 650 6 $a Leadership $v CongreÌs. $v CongreÌs. 650 7 $a Espionage. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00915379 650 7 $a Intelligence service. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00975848 650 7 $a International relations. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00977053 650 7 $a Leadership. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00994701 650 7 $a FuÌhrung $2 gnd 650 7 $a Geheimdienst $2 gnd 650 7 $a Spionageabwehr $2 gnd 651 7 $a Asien $2 gnd 651 7 $a Europa $2 gnd 651 7 $a GroÃbritannien $2 gnd 651 7 $a Naher Osten $2 gnd 651 7 $a USA $2 gnd 655 7 $a Case studies. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01423765 655 7 $a Conference papers and proceedings. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01423772 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 655 7 $a Conference papers and proceedings. $2 lcgft 655 7 $a Case studies. $2 lcgft 655 7 $a Actes de congreÌs. $2 rvmgf 655 7 $a EÌtudes de cas. $2 rvmgf 700 1 $a Moran, Christopher R., $e editor. 700 1 $a Stout, Mark, $d 1964- $e editor. 700 1 $a Iordanou, Ioanna, $e editor. 700 1 $a Maddrell, Paul, $e editor. 776 08 $i Online version: $t Spy chiefs. $d Washington, DC : Georgetown University Press, 2018 $z 9781626165205 $w (DLC) 2017012716 941 $a 1 952 $l PLAX964 $d 20240724073846.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=D67C9D48214711EEBC7340321FECA4DB 994 $a 92 $b IOHInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
