With this project, Warburg created a visual reference system that was far ahead of its time. In cooperation with the Warburg Institute, Roberto Ohrt and Axel Heil have now undertaken the task of finding all of the individual pictures from the atlas and displaying these reproductions of artworks from the Middle East, European antiquity, and the Renaissance in the same way that Warburg himself showed them, on panels hung with black fabric. This folio volume and the exhibition in Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin succeed in restoring Warburg's vanished legacy something that researchers have long considered impossible. -- ABY WARBURG (1866-1929), scion of a Hamburg banking family, completed his doctorate in 1892 on the Italian Renaissance painter Sandro Botticelli. As a result, he comprehensively studied the interplay of myths, images and rites from different cultural contexts. This lead him to his main subject matter: the afterlife of antiquity in the Renaissance. With his attempt to break down the rigid boundaries of art history, Warburg is regarded as one of the fathers of modern pictorial science. -- Exhibition: Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, Germany (02.04. - 22.06.2020). 500 $a Published in conjunction with an exhibition held at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, April 2 - June 22, 2020. 504 $a Includes bibliographical references (page 180) and index. 505 00 $t Bilderatlas Mnemosyne -- $r Roberto Ohrt and Axel Heil -- $g Concordance. $t Bilderatlas in the 21st century / $r Bernd Scherer -- $g The $t Mnemosyne and its afterlife / $r Roberto Ohrt and Axel Heil -- $g The $t making of Warburg's Bilderatlas Mnemosyne / $r Claudia Wedepohl -- $t Fragment of an introduction to the Bilderatlas Mnemosyne / $r Aby Warburg ; with an editorial note by Claudia Wedepohl -- $t On the recovery of the Bilderatlas Mnemosyne and the actual state of the captions / $r Roberto Ohrt and Axel Heil -- $g Key to captions -- $t Bilderatlas Mnemosyne -- $g Preliminary versions and unnumbered panels -- $g Concordance. 600 10 $a Warburg, Aby, $d 1866-1929. $t Mnemosyne $v Exhibitions. 630 07 $a Mnemosyne (Warburg, Aby) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01377650 650 0 $a Art $x Historiography $v Exhibitions. 650 0 $a Art and society $v Exhibitions. 650 0 $a Mnemonics $v Exhibitions. 650 7 $a Art and society. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00815432 650 7 $a Art $x Historiography. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00815259 650 7 $a Mnemonics. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01024177 655 7 $a Exhibition catalogs. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01424028 655 7 $a Exhibition catalogs. $2 lcgft 710 2 $a Warburg Institute, $e sponsoring body. 710 2 $a Haus der Kulturen der Welt, $e host institution. 700 1 $a Ohrt, Roberto, $e writer of supplementary textual content. $e writer of supplementary textual content. 700 1 $a Heil, Axel, $e writer of supplementary textual content. $e writer of supplementary textual content. 700 12 $i Container of (work): $a Warburg, Aby, $d 1866-1929. $t Mnemosyne. 941 $a 2 952 $l USUX851 $d 20240202024749.0 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20220317014730.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=1099FEA071B711EB8A4F4B2E3BECA4DBInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
