Summary:
Based on a novel by master wordsmith Chandrashekhara Kambar, the story revolves around Singari, born to one of the three wives of the corrupt and greedy Pandari Gowda, head of Nandagavi Village. In a bid to acquire wealth, Gowda gets Singari to marry his sister Shantavva's son's corpse. Singaravva is shocked. Later, Gowda gets Singaravva to marry Saragam Desai of Shivapura, whom he meets at a folk theatre performance. Desai's old mother wants Singari to give her a grandson and she promises to part with her golden waistband in return. But Desai proves a failure on the first night and Singari is disappointed. Desai's friends lure him out and try to get him drunk and take away his property. Mariya saves Desai and brings him home and gives all the property papers to Singari. Singari's mother-in-law comes to know of her son's shortcoming and she dies after giving her golden waistband to Singari. Singari offers herself to Mariya with the intention of getting pregnant. When she does, Desai accuses her of adultery and writes a letter to her and commits suicide. Mariya takes the blame and is jailed. Singaravva awaits the birth of her child.
