Drawing on examples from the Warsaw, Lodz, and Vilna ghettos, Dance on the Razor's Edge explores how under these circumstances highly improvised legal spheres emerged in these coerced and heterogeneous ghetto communities. Looking at sources from multiple archives and countries, this book investigates how the Jewish Councils, set up on German orders, formulated new definitions of criminal offenses and established legal institutions on their own initiative as a desperate attempt to ensure the survival of the ghetto communities. Bethke explores how people under these circumstances tried to make sense of everyday lives that had been turned upside down, taking with them pre-war notions of justice and morality, and considers the extent to which this rupture led to new judgments on human behaviour. In doing so, this book aims to understand how people attempted to use their very limited scope for action in order to survive. Set against the background of a Holocaust historiography that often still seeks for clear categories of "good" and "bad" behaviour, Dance on the Razor's Edge calls for a new understanding of the ghettos as complex communities in an unprecedented emergency situation."-- $c Provided by publisher. 530 $a Issued also in electronic format. 650 0 $a Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) $z Warsaw. $z Warsaw. 650 0 $a Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) $z ¿odz. $z ¿odz. 650 0 $a Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) $z Vilnius. $z Vilnius. 650 0 $a Crime prevention $z Warsaw. $z Warsaw. 650 0 $a Crime prevention $z ¿odz. $z ¿odz. 650 0 $a Crime prevention $z Vilnius. $z Vilnius. 650 6 $a Holocauste, 1939-1945 $z Varsovie. $z Varsovie. 650 6 $a Holocauste, 1939-1945 $z ¿odz. $z ¿odz. 650 6 $a Holocauste, 1939-1945 $z Vilnious. $z Vilnious. 650 6 $a Criminalite $x Prevention $z Varsovie. $z Varsovie. 650 6 $a Criminalite $x Prevention $z ¿odz. $z ¿odz. 650 6 $a Criminalite $x Prevention $z Vilnious. $z Vilnious. 650 7 $a Crime prevention. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00883055 651 7 $a Lithuania $z Vilnius. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01223003 651 7 $a Poland $z ¿odz $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01209506 651 7 $a Poland $z Warsaw. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204515 650 7 $a Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) $z Europe, Eastern. $2 nli 650 7 $a Jewish ghettos $z Warsaw. $z Warsaw. $2 nli 650 7 $a Jewish ghettos $z Vilnius. $z Vilnius. $2 nli 650 7 $a Jewish councils. $2 nli 650 7 $a Crime prevention. $2 nli 651 7 $a Litzmannstadt-Getto (¿odz, Poland) $2 nli 648 7 $a 1939-1945 $2 fast 700 1 $a Howe, Sharon, $e translator. 776 08 $i Online version: $a Bethke, Svenja. $s Tanz auf Messers Schneide.
