Summary:
"When it was created by the Association pour la diffusion internationale de l'art français (ADIAF) in partnership with the Centre Pompidou, the main objectives of the Marcel Duchamp Prize were to defend and promote the French art scene at the dawn of the new millennium. Today, it has become a major annual event on our national contemporary art scene. Similar to the film and theatre awards that rhythm the art world calendar, it often provokes debate, but nevertheless gives us the satisfaction of knowing it is eagerly-awaited, observed, admired despite its controversiality, and above all, reflects the passion of our current society and its audiences for the very latest contemporary art. This year, for the first time, works by the four finalists Bertille Bak, Bouchra Khalili, Tarik Kiswanson and Massinissa Selmani are displayed in the Centre Pompidou's gallery space, at the very heart of its contemporary collections. This new space creates an ongoing dialogue between their works and the French and international contemporary creation represented in the collections at the Musée national d'art moderne. Over the last twenty years since the first edition, nearly one hundred prize winners have created a kaleidoscopic vision of the current art scene with their work and exhibitions. This year's edition is characterised by the artists' desire to create a dialogue between their work and practices, whilst avoiding the competitiveness you would normally expect to find in art awards of this kind." -- page 6
