Four authors discuss the question of how to proceed with euthanasia to deal with psychological suffering. They do it from a medical, philosophical and religious perspective and from these perspectives try to answer the question of what causes people with psychological suffering to ask about euthanasia. It is clear that it is a complex topic. That it is often a painful, hopeless situation is also a fact. But is the use of euthanasia the ultimate answer to the cry for help expressed by these people? Or are there alternatives where people take the question seriously without taking life? Because euthanasia always remains the most radical and irreversible act one can do to a human being: taking their lives. The essays came from a concern among the authors, who see that more and more often euthanasia is used as an answer, whereby they question whether an act that was previously a punishable act but was now legalized under certain conditions, will evolve further as one of the possible treatments for psychological suffering. Here, too, the question is to what extent absolute self-determination and absolute freedom are winning over the absolute protection of every human being, especially the person who suffers psychologically. We are clearly on a slippery slope here, and need to address this question now. Vier auteurs buigen zich over de vraag hoe het verder moet met de euthanasie bij psychisch lijden. Ze doen het uit medische, filosofische en gelovige hoek en proberen vanuit deze invalshoeken de vraag te beantwoorden wat mensen met psychisch lijden brengt om de euthanasievraag te stellen. Dat het om een complex gegeven gaat, is duidelijk. Dat het dikwijls om een pijnlijke, uitzichtloze situatie gaat, is eveneens een feit. Maar is het toepassen van euthanasie het ultieme antwoord op de noodkreet die deze mensen uiten? Of zijn er alternatieven waarbij men wel degelijk de vraag ernstig neemt zonder het leven weg te nemen? Want euthanasie blijft toch steeds het meest radicale en onomkeerbare wat men kan doen bij een mens: zijn leven zelf afnemen. Het essay kwam er vanuit een bekommernis bij de auteurs, die zien dat er steeds meer en vlugger gegrepen wordt naar euthanasie als antwoord, waarbij ze zich de vraag stelden of een handeling, die voorheen een strafbare act was maar nu onder bepaalde voorwaarden werd gelegaliseerd, verder zal evolueren als een van de mogelijke behandelingen bij psychisch lijden. Ook hier luidt de vraag in welke mate de absolute zelfbeschikking en de absolute vrijheid het aan het winnen zijn op de absolute beschermwaardigheid van de mens, van ieder mens, ook van de mens die psychisch zwaar lijdt. We zitten hier duidelijk op een hellend vlak, en blijkbaar is dat nu aan het overslaan.
