Prior to World War II, before New Zealand gained economic autonomy, members of the Withers family lead playful and idealistic lives despite their poverty. But when daughters Daphne and Francie pretend to search for treasure at a garbage depot, Francie dies in a horrible accident and Daphne is sent to a mental health facility where she undergoes shock treatment.
