Richard Sharpe, captain of the Light Company, deals with problems from without and within as he prepares to meet Napoleon in Portugal, including a challenge to his command, and the enmity of two Portuguese brothers who see Sharpe as an obstacle in their plan to ingratiate themselves with the French invaders.
