Sarah Zuckerman and Jenny Jones are best friends in Washington, D.C., in the politically charged 1980s. Sarah is the shy, wary product of an unhappy home; Jenny is an all-American girl with seemingly perfect parents. When the girls write letters to Soviet premier Yuri Andropov asking for peace, Jenny's is answered. Her visit to the USSR causes a media sensation. Then, in 1985, she and her parents die in a tragic plane crash. Ten years later Sarah, about to graduate from college, receives a letter suggesting that Jenny's death was a hoax. (Inspired by a true story.)
