Summary:
During a night of drunken debauchery, Michael Henchard sells his wife Susan and his young daughter Elizabeth-Jane to a sailor for the price of five guineas. Consumed by guilt, he vows to give up drinking for 21 years. Since then, he has skillfully been able to keep his dark past a secret while starting a political career as the mayor of the small town of Casterbridge. His carefully-built public image is shattered, however, when his wife and daughter return to him decades later.
