Notes:
This edition of the memoir written by Francis Marion Wilcox between 1893 and 1894 was edited and produced by his great-grandson, Joseph Leigh Wilcox, in 2010. It tells the story of Francis Marion Wilcox and his family genealogy. The Civil War portion of the memoir contains an interesting story. From the editor, "Events in 1862 created a dilemma. Wilcox was a young man with no sympathy for the Confederate cause. When hostilities erupted, he found himself trapped (because he was on a family visit) in Confederate North Carolina. He decided his best chance for getting back to the Union was first to join the Confederate army, to wait until he was somewhere near Union territory, and then to take a terrifying chance on fleeing to the Union side." An addition to this collection has been made. It is a small notebook that belonged to Francis Marion Wilcox and was discovered at an estate sale in Des Moines. It contains routine business entries and some information about his family and social life. The earliest entry is dated 1897 and a partial transcription has been made by Joseph Leigh Wilcox. It is also included in this collection. No restrictions on access.
