When the wife of wealthy hedge fund owner Gregory Breckenridge disappears the police suspect him of having her killed in order to marry his mistress. So Breckenridge hires Harry Brock to find her. Harry locates a professional skip tracer Caedmon Rivers to help him find Afton Breckenridge. The information that Caedmon collects convinces Harry that Afton is still alive and is systematically cashing out all her investments. But the evidence against Breckenridge mounts when the police receive a letter seemingly written by Afton stating that if she disappears Breckenridge has killed her.
